Rotary International Presidential Conference in Venice, led by Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta (2021/22) will address the important topic of how economies can rebuild better in such a way however that we ensure we address the increasingly critical aspect of protection of our environment. Businesses need to transition to a mode of operation which protects and enhances the environment, in a genuine manner – no green washing. Processes need to be improved and businesses need to create more sustainable products and services.

The problem with most paper cups is that they are not usually all paper. Most are paper on the outside, with a nearly invisible coating of polypropylene on the inside. This combination of paper and plastic makes recycling nearly impossible without specialized machinery.

Of the 9% that can actually be sorted, processed and sold, one more danger lurks before we can even hope our plastic will start on its way to a new life: it must be clean.

Can we make vanilla from plastic bottles? The answer is no – natural vanilla comes from a vanilla bean. But using plastic waste and an engineered bacteria, scientists from the University of Edinburgh have created vanillin molecules that are the chemical match of the vanilla extracted from beans.
