Reducing Plastic Waste in India : a Global Grant Example

Do you have a dream that your Club could reduce plastic pollution in a big, fat, impactful way?  Rotary Global Grants (30k to 400k in size) give you and your Club the financial tool to bring a dream to full implementation.  But they are challenging to receive, and require hard work up- front to ensure that TRF money is used well, and will provide sustainable change with input and support from the local community.

ESRAG’s Plastic Solution Task Force will explore ways to overcome the challenges of Global Grant development by learning from a master, Rotary member Prakasam Tata, Ph.D., BCES QRP (Emeritus)

Called Prakash by fellow Rotarians, Dr. Tata will talk about his recently approved grant on Plastic Waste Collection, Processing, and Recycling and Reuse to be implemented in the coastal city of Viskhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. The grant is already fully funded, and Prakash will share advice, challenges faced, and lessons learned.

Other meeting business will include Plastic Solutions preparations for the Rotary International Convention in Houston June 4 – 8, a short presentation on “One Thing Your Club Can Do Today”, and opportunities to get more involved in reducing plastic.

Speaker Information:

Prakash is an Environmental Engineering and Sciences professional and has been active in the field for the past 60+ years.   He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers University in 1966, and served on the faculty of Cornell University until 1974.  He joined the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and retired in 2002 to do voluntary and consulting work. 

Prakash is a member of the Rotary Club of Naperville, Illinois, and currently serves as the Executive Director, for the Center for the Transformation of Waste Technology, a nonprofit organization (www.ctwt.us)

He has published dozens of articles and continues to consult with and advise municipal, industrial, NGOs, and governments on projects in his field, internationally and locally.
